Alex Strachan Cup 2000 Report
The Alex Strachan Cup is an annual competition held at Pinewood Gymnastics Club, Bracknell to commemorate the memory of Alex Strachan, who was a strong supporter of British Sports Aerobics. Heathrow sent a strong team of their younger members ranging from ages 8-16 to compete in the Fig code categories. Here are the results:
Female individual - U10's Here Heathrow took all three medals. Vicky Chagger came out with the gold after performing a good routine with no errors to score 11.95. Liliana Walduck closely followed her on 10.70 (Lily is the current British under 10 champion) and Rosie Webster took 3rd place with a score of 8.90. We should see quite a competition from these girls later in the year at the 2000 British Championships.
Female Individual - U 12's This is a tough group full of talented athletes. Here Heathrow were represented by three girls. Melissa Flaherty who finished 7th with a score of 11.45, Christine Adams who just missed out on a medal in fourth place scoring 13.50 and Rachel Murphy who took the bronze medal with 13.60. Rachel did really well as this is her first year competing as an U12 as she only turns 10 later this year. She performed a new routine to a Latin piece, which was obviously appreciated by the judges as well as the crowd.
Female Individual - U14's Here Heathrow had another clean sweep of medals. Charlotte Walcott (the current British Champion) performed a difficult and lively routine to take the gold medal with a score of 15.20. This was the highest score of the day in the FIG code section. Lauren Barton took the silver medal scoring 14.50 with Chelsea Dixon (another athlete who has just moved up a level) performing well to win the bronze medal. Sarah Yusufu came 9th with a score of 11.70.
Female Individual - U16's Here Katie Hopkins was the only Heathrow representative in this age group but she performed well to take the silver medal. Katie scored 12.80 and finished one mark ahead of the athlete in third place.
Female Individual - U18's Four athletes from the club were in this group. Selina John, the current British U16 champion continued her winning record and took first place by a margin of 1.6 marks. Joanna Griffin, who finished out of the medals in last years British championships, has been working hard and here she performed a new routine winning the silver medal with a score of 13.45. Rosie Glossop finished third scoring 12.65. These three girls also compete as a trio and they won gold with a score of 12.80. Laura Hayter also represented the club in this U18 section and she finished 6th with a score of 11.25. This too will be a hotly contested group at the British Championships in October.
Male Individual - U12's Here Heathrow's sole male athlete performed an energetic and expressive routine to score 11.95 and win the gold by over 2 marks from his nearest rival!
Pairs - U14's Lauren Barton and Charlotte Walcott continued their winning ways in this section performing well to score 11.50 and walk away with the gold medal.
Overall the club entered 16 athletes and won gold medals in 6 of the 8 categories they entered. A brilliant result for the athletes and a reward for all their hard work.
