Brisish Championships 1999
Heathrow sports aerobics team continue winning waysHeathrow sports aerobics team continued their winning performances by coming away from the recent British championships with a bag full of gold medals and British titles. The club entered thirty one athletes in the competition and by the end of the day had no less than ten british titles to their credit! The team are coached by husband & wife team Gary Jarvis & Natalia Ilienko-Jarvis
One of the youngest stars was eight year old Joseph Denton who in his first ever sports aerobics event came away with the british title in the u10 section. Moving to the senior athletes Kerry Scotts took her third consecutive u18 title to the delight of the enthusiastic crowd.
In the over 18 categories the athletes were not only competing for national glory but for a place in the team for the upcoming European sports aerobics championships. Heathrow will have five athletes in the British squad for the championship. The trio of Sarah Needham, Anoushka Mistry and Kelly Snape took the gold at the British with a difficult routine packed with new elements. Joanne Stevens took gold in the female individual section with Natalia Ilienko-Jarvis taking the silver. These athletes now have five weeks to perfect their routines before the Europeans begin.
The European championships were to be staged in Turkey in December but due to the devastating effects of the recent earthquake they were unable to fulfill this committment. British Gymnastics have stepped in to host this first ever European championships at the Birmingham NEC from 3-5th December. This is a great opportunity for the British team to shine under the support of a home crowd. It will also serve to introduce people to a little known, but growing sport in this country.
