Heathrow Sports Aerobics Continue Winning Ways
Kerry Scotts Wins Gold at the French Open Championships

From April 14th-16th the French town of Clermont-Ferrand hosted the French Open and first World Series Sports Aerobics Championships.

Heathrow Sports Aerobics Team sent four athletes to represent the club in the French Open. Additionally four of their senior athletes were entered in the World Series event as members of the Great Britain squad.

World Series Event
This is a new competition that will have four rounds over the next year. Each round to be hosted by a different country (Germany and Romania have the next two rounds) culminating in a grand final. Competitors earn ranking points at each event if they qualify for finals and finish in the top eight.

Female Individual Category
Here Joanne Stevens represented GB and performed a competent routine. An amount of mistakes meant she finished in 9th place in qualifying with a score of 14.550. Unfortunately only the top eight go through to finals. Joanne was only .3 of a mark behind the Romanian in eighth place.

Trio Category
In this category Great Britain were represented by the senior Heathrow trio. With a new routine only completed four weeks prior to this event this was the first time that Anoushka Mistry, Sarah Needham and Kelly Snape had competed their new composition. They performed well to qualify in fourth place and earn a berth in the finals. They scored 15.476 and were less than one mark behind the all male Romanian trio, who have won medals at the last World and European championships.

In the finals the next day the trio increased their score to 15.676 by performing another good routine. They maintained their position from qualification and came fourth overall. An excellent result that bodes well for the World championships in 1 month's time.

French Open Event
This event ran alongside the World Series and gave Heathrow an opportunity for their younger stars to experience some international competition.

Junior Female Individual
Here the Heathrow athletes Selina John and Rosie Glossop were up against international competition from France, Germany, Slovakia, Finland and Lithuania. Selina is current u16 British Champion and Rosie is bronze medallist in the same category. Both girls performed well but found the international experience a big challenge both mentally and physically. They did very well in this tough international field with Selina finishing in a creditable 8th position (13.00) and Rosie not far behind in 13th (11.850).

Junior Trio
Here Rosie and Selina teamed up with Joanna Griffin to represent the club. This was the first time they had competed as a trio and they did an excellent job. They qualified for the finals in 7th place with a score of 11.800. The finals were tough as the organisers combined the senior and junior groups. This meant that the girls were competing directly against the French and indeed the 1999 European trio champions! They again performed well and scored 9.938 to finish in eighth place overall.

Senior Female Individual Category
In 1999 Kerry Scotts won the junior category in this event and has now moved up to the senior ranks. She again turned in a gold medal performance. In qualifying Kerry performed well to finish first with a score of 15.20. However she felt that her routine could be better and in the finals the next day she proved this. She scored 16.00 winning the gold medal beating the second place athlete, Anke Beranek from Germany, by 1.3 marks!

Overall this competition was very successful for all the Heathrow team. Coaches Gary Jarvis and Natalia Ilienko-Jarvis were very pleased with all the performances and hard work of their athletes.
