Welsh Open Championships 2002With the British Championships fast approaching Britainís Sports Aerobics Athletes had this event as their last chance to perfect their routines and impress the judges. Heathrow entered 22 athletes in the competition.
NAC Female individual/Pairs U12
Here the younger and newer club members took part in some of their first competitions at this level. Katie Smith performed brilliantly to take home the silver medal in her first competition scoring 12.85 only 0.05 behind the gold. She then joined up with Isobel Garratt in the pairís section performing their Mickey Mouse routine to score 10.76 for the silver medal. Both girls will be looking to improve their performance and take home the gold in the upcoming British Championships.

Female Individual/Pairs U12
Here Heathrow entered four athletes who performed well but all finished outside of the medal placings. There are around 19 athletes currently competing in this group and with only the top eight to qualify at the British Championships for the final the girls will have to work extra hard to have any chance of a medal in this tough group. Michelle Faircloth scored 12.95 for 5th place improving on her seventh place at the Alex Strachan. Making a few errors Vicky Chagger scored 12.80 to finish just behind Michelle and finished 6th overall with Kerry Dixon improving on her score to take 9th place with 12.00 and Rosie Webster taking 14th place with 11.55. As you can see the scores were quite close and any one of these athletes could contend for a place in the top 8 at the British championships. Rosie and Michelle also work together as an U12 pair and they fared better in this event as they took home the bronze medal scoring 9.56.
Female Individual U14
Here Heathrow entered 5 athletes with three finishing in the top eight. Stephanie Fois took home the bronze medal performing an excellent routine to score 13.25. Meghan Davies who has been improving with each competition scored 12.75 for fourth place with Jackie Bamforth in 5th with 12.55. Christine Adams took 10th place with 11.45 and Kirsty Banfield finished just behind with 11.30 for 11th place. Heathrow have a strong group of talented athletes competing in this group and two of their individuals were missing from this event, one through injury. These five athletes plus Sarah Muggeridge also perform as a six team. They took the silver medal in this category performing their Ghostbusters routine to score 10.98.
Pairs U 14
Here Vicky Chagger and Rachel Murphy joined forces to take home a well-deserved gold medal for Heathrow. Rachel has only just come back from a knee injury and will be competing as an individual in the U 14 category when she is back to full fitness. The girls performed a good routine to the Adams family to score 12.94 finishing over 3 marks ahead of the pair in second place!
Female Individual U16
Here Heathrow gained more medals with Lauren Barton scoring 15.90 to take the bronze medal. Laurenís trio partners Sarah Yusufu and Chelsey Dixon also competed scoring 14.10 and 13.65 to finish 9th and 10th respectively.
Female Individual 17yrs FIG
Here Heathrow took the silver medal home with Katie Cannon scoring 15.70 missing the gold by a mere 0.05 of a point! .Charlotte Murray performed a new routine to Kylie Minogue to score 13.45 for 5th place and Ria Cousins with 12.70 for sixth.
Female Individual Level 1 O 18ís
Here Laura Hayter performed well scoring 12.80 improving on her Alex Strachan score by around two marks to take the bronze medal.
Female Individual Senior FIG
Here Joanna Griffin was joined by Selina John to give Heathrow two senior individual competitors. Selina previously competed for Heathrow and is a former British champion but then gave up the sport. She has now returned and is training hard alongside Joanna with both hoping to make the national squad and represent Great Britain in future events. Selina performed very well in her first return to competition to score 15.05 and take the bronze medal. Joanna scored 13.25 to take 5th place.
Here Sarah Yusufu, Lauren Barton and Chelsey Dixon performed as a trio for only the second time on home ground. They have already won an international medal this year as a trio. Here they went one better than the Alex Strachan Cup scoring 13.54 and winning the gold.
Trio 17 yrs
Here the Heathrow trio continued there winning ways scoring 14.99 for the gold medal. Charlotte Murray, Ria Cousins and Katie Cannon are current British champions and have enjoyed international success winning several medals at competitions this year.
Overall the competition was a success with Heathrow taking away 22 medals
in total and maintaining their position at the top of the FIG club of
the year rankings. Congratulations to Head coaches and choreographer Gary
